Dos Amigos Cantina – Review

Dos Amigos Cantina – Mission Bay, Auckland

We were going to go to burgerfuel but it was packed, we had walked past Dos Amigos on the way and I had pointed out to my date that I wanted to try it and as the tides change so did we so we ended up back at Dos Amigos

Parking being mission bay wasn’t ideal but for a sunny arvo wasn’t too bad, plenty of free parking if you don’t mind a short stroll along the waterfront

Dos Amigos wasn’t too busy a table for 2 right on the street was free so we grabbed that and quickly had a polite waitress come over and take our drink order, shortly there after another waiter came to take our drink order too

The vibe there is pretty cool, the staff get into the mexican theme which some might find cheesy but I could take or leave it, IF you’re in the mood for big hats you’l likely enjoy it.. Given Mexican food (thankfully) has boomed in popularity in Auckland in the last 18 months or so there is quite a lot of choice, therefor a lot of competition to be good because as we know word spreads and only the best survive. As I understand it, Dos Amigos as been around a while so they cant be bad.. right?

I had the Chimichanga $23, mostly cause I liked saying Chimichanga

Think of it to be basically a fried burrito, which .. worked well..

Big portion which was awesome great helping of sides alas it was more of a square bun than a burrito but hey still tastes the same,

Which by the way, was pretty good… seemingly quality ingredients and well prepared I wasn’t complaining

My friend had the Tequila Lime Chicken $26

Tequila marinated chicken which I was told was well prepared and really tasty again with generous heplings of blackbeans and rice on the side,

The rice was ok but felt sort of 2nd rate next to the quality of the rest of the meal

Chuck in a couple drinks total for dinner for 2 was $64 which isn’t crazy for Auckland eating with that size a portion personally I wouldn’t need that much and would rather pay a little less to get a little less but you might have a bigger appetite than me

Overall the experience was really good, great staff great food and great people watching fodder if you take a street table

I’d give it a 7/10, would nom again but I’d go in knowing its a big feed and not the cheapest eats in Auckland.
