Alpino Cambridge – A Taste of True Elegance in the Heart of Town
Nestled in the charm of Cambridge, Alpino delivers not just a meal, but an experience, where the beauty of the town is matched by the finesse on your plate.
We began with a cured meats platter that was nothing short of divine. Three varieties of meat, paired with walnuts, pickles, onions, and a sensational strip of toasted handmade bread. It was the perfect way to start.
For the main, I chose the 200g tenderloin, served with silky smooth mash and lightly charred cabbage, all brought together by a rich peppercorn reduction. A pint of Peroni complemented the dish beautifully. Taking the advice of our waitress, I opted for medium rare instead of my usual blue and I wasn’t disappointed. Near perfection. My only critique? The cabbage. While good, it didn’t quite rise to the level of the steak. A more elevated side could have made this dish truly exceptional.
Next up was the Caprese pizza, hand-stretched, beautifully presented, and topped with tomato sauce, buffalo mozzarella, fresh tomatoes, and basil. If you’re a pizza lover, this one’s for you. It’s easy to dismiss a Margherita-style pizza as basic, but Alpino proves otherwise. This isn’t your average takeaway, it’s crafted with care and heart. Paired with a crisp Hendrick’s gin and tonic, it was a delight.
We also sampled the mozzarella bites. A generous portion and delicious while hot. Just be sure to enjoy them quickly, as they lose a bit of their magic once cooled.
Service
From the moment we walked in, we were warmly greeted and promptly shown to our table. Booking is highly recommended, as this place is popular, and for good reason. Service was prompt, friendly, and full of personality. Our waitress had us laughing within minutes and made us feel right at home. Drinks flowed effortlessly, and there was always someone nearby if we needed anything.
Venue
Though it may feel a bit tight at the entrance, the space is cleverly designed to accommodate a good number of guests without feeling cramped. The décor is classy yet understated, striking a balance between casual and upscale. Whether you’re popping in for a midday drink or settling in for a romantic dinner, Alpino sets the perfect tone. One note: the evening lighting is quite dim—great for ambiance, but if your eyesight isn’t the best, bring your specs!
Final Thoughts
Alpino delivers top-tier food, outstanding service, and a welcoming atmosphere. It’s a standout in Cambridge and a place we’ll return to again and again. Hard to fault, and easy to love.
