To follow on from my previous post on why I started Muay Thai, I thought I may as well document my journey to fighting as well.
I’ve been training Muay Thai for maybe just over a year now and started sparring a couple of months after starting. In fact it was nearly a year ago today when I first started sparring and what a change that was.
Here I was on the pads, thinking that I could kick pretty nicely and look like I have some good punches, but then when you put it against another person, it looks completely shit.
I went from somewhat competent, to someone who kept getting kicked and punched in the face and looking like a was having a fit.
I was scared of getting hit (Still am) and overall just not very good. So I kept at it.
Then came the numerous injuries. While training, you are bound to pick up injury after injury. Usually there is a new one each week, whether it be a clashed knee or a twisted toe, or you’ve taken a foot to the face and now it hurts to chew.
I’ve come to take it as part of daily life, where you just train around each injury until it’s healed and just keep on trucking. Sometimes that’s not so much fun though.
Since starting Muay Thai, I’ve had a large interest in fighting, and every time I’ve gone to support someone fighting, I’ve always wanted to get in there. But then I’ve wondered if I was ready yet, I didn’t want to go in and look completely unmatched in front of all of those people.
So I decided to fight at the start of 2017 after the Christmas break.
My fitness is pretty low at the moment so I figured that I could work on my technical side of things and work on my fitness when I start up again next year.
I’m not really looking forward to the fitness side of things to be completely honest, it’s going to mean that I have to push myself to go running early in the morning, or doing another hour of training each night to make sure that I’m as fit as I possibly can be.
And then there is the weight cut, depending on what weight you end up fighting at. I’m currently 78kg but I want to fight at around 72-74kg if I can drop enough.
Oh how fun it sounds.
Once I start training harder in the new year, I’ll try to include my weekly progress update leading up to my fight.
