Hey burger lovers
one last review from Tauranga before I bugger off back to the big smoke,
Matt was down to visit and we went for a late lunch over at Astro, mostly cause it was the only place open on a Monday before dinner time for a decent feed and there was parking right outside so that made it easier
I had
Betty’s world famous big burger
Two juicy beef patties
tasty cheddar
lettuce
Tomato, pickle, bettys bbq sauce & mayo
Garnished with Onion rings also came with beer batter chips for $16 – my coke which was about half the size of a can was $4
I’m not entirely sure how long it took to come out, it wasn’t long we didn’t feel like we had to wait, thankfully it wasn’t raining so we had a nice spot in the courtyard, I did see they had a proper BBQ smoker which I would have liked to try but ah well.
we more or less had the place to ourselves, other than some kids that were loud.. but lets not get into that debate about parents who let their kids make a racket..
The burger,
Smaller than I had expected, with a name with the word BIG in it, I expected a little more, perhaps they are incorporating the Big Mac mentality where they just say it and it means fuck all. it did however have 2 decent size patties in it, which were well cooked and thick, thick is good; thick lets you get it black and textured on the outside yet still pink on the inside. this was done very well and can’t fault it. Its not however the same for the rest of the burger. as soon as I picked it up it was dripping. Matt made mention of how toasted the buns were, almost crunchy like a thick roll from the bakery, ok maybe that’s their style but I think they do it to absorb some of the moisture which It did to an extent but not all of it
The Bettys BBQ sauce was decent, nothing to blow ya socks off but a good sauce none the less, the only real complaint I’d have about this burger was how soggy it was, by the end of it the bun was like a paste back to its natural form
Overall I’d give this burger a soild 6 outa 10, if you’re there and you’re hungry its a decent option but certainly not a destination for it, however given how popular the pub is especially over the summer, it’s not a bad option when you add in beer and the chance of bagging a good looking tourist
Until next time burger lovers!
