8 Wired have done quite a few barrel aged beers now. If your not familiar with the technique, they are literally beers aged in a barrel. Usually a barrel with lots of flavour in it, like oak barrels that have been used to age red wine, port or whiskey. Usually a very robust beer is used, a dark ale, stout or sour beer works best, and they pick up the flavours left in the barrel.
Sour Side Of The Moon was aged for more than a year in Pinot Noir barrels, and wow does it work well. Opening the bottle gives an instant hit of Pinot and grapes and it pours dark with a deep rick red tint.
First taste is lots of sour, not a lot of apricot, but just sour, if you like sour beers it’s fantastic, if not, it maybe a bit to much. But it is backed by lovely berry tones from the Pinot barrel, raspberry and a gentle sweetness. As you get into it starts to taste more and more like a really good glass of red wine. That is quite impressive for a beer, and is a great example of just how many different things you can do with some grain, imagination, talent and a good dose of skill and experience.
