Garage Project have recently started sending Death From Above overseas in cans. It should travel pretty well, but I read review by a beer fan in Europe and got the impression some of its flavours may not have made the trip.
So I found one to try.
Death From Above is a combination of hops and spice designed to capture classic Asian food flavours in a beer.
Chile and spice in a beer either works or it doesn’t, it needs to be enough to taste, but not so much it over powers the hops and malt. Fortunately Garage Project are no strangers to adding chili to beer, and they get it just right. To take it to the next level though they back that chili with hops to add the lime, lemon and ginger notes found in Asia cooking. The flavours are quite subtle, but they are there, enhanced by some capsicum and lemon grass notes on the nose.
Its an interesting beer, and certainly achieves what it sets out to do. The first taste instantly reminded me of Asian stir fry. As an exercise in creativity and flavour building it is fantastic. But as a beer, it might be pushing the boundaries.
Worth trying though, and a great way to try some of the more alternative ways of flavoring beer.
