Project Quarter Horse – 1990 Honda CBR250RR

Hey team! I’m stoked to finally be able to reveal my two year long project, my Repsol CBR250RR!

Following a pretty nasty crash on Hampton Down’s famous sweeper on Easter weekend, 2015, the bike wasn’t looking too great. We decided to strip it down to the bare frame and start over, with all new parts (as much as possible, anyway), a new paint scheme, and some cool aftermarket pieces to bring it up to date looks-wise.

The bike has pretty much had a complete transformation since it’s last public outing – anyone that knows the bike from before the accident would hardly recognise it! It used to be a “track only” bike, now I’ve returned the lights, indicators, and new mirrors to make it road legal again.

My favourite new additions to the bike are the genuine carbon fiber mirrors, front fender, engine case protectors, and heel guards. The mirror finish HPC coating on the full system exhaust definitely captures the attention of onlookers too! Other smaller modification that catch your eye include the black teflon coated braided brake lines front and rear from Venhill, and rearsets by Tyga.

Hanging off the bike is now going to be a lot easier, with the new Progrip hand grips and tank pad, as well as the custom Stompgrip tank grip. The bike should handle a little bit better too, with upgraded front fork springs taking care of the bumps through turns.

The whole cooling system has been replaced with new parts, including a new aluminium radiator with custom made stone guard, which should protect the freshly rebuilt motor when the throttle is pinned to the stopper!

Honestly, it’s been so long since I started this project, I can barely remember what it’s like to ride the bike! I’m looking forward to getting it registered and road legal again – and when the sun decides to show itself properly again I might just have to take it back to the track to see how it feels at full noise…!

It’s definitely been a labour of love, with parts being so hard to find for a 27 year old bike, and the struggles we had with getting the motor to run smoothly with the modifications I’ve undertaken for more horsepower, but worth it all in the end I think. There isn’t another bike in existence that I’m aware of quite like what I’ve built!

There are a few more things I’d like to do to the bike in the next few months before summer gets here, so I doubt it’ll ever quite be “finished”…!

There are a few people to thank for their help with the whole project:

Brett Roberts Mechanical, Tuakau Panelbeaters, Darbi Accessories Ltd, The Wrap Shop, Arkro Powdercoating, HPC Coatings, Spectrum Motorcycles, Botany Honda, NZ Motorcycle Movers, and most of all my partner Abbee for her patience!

Thanks guys, look forward to seeing you out on the road!

– Scott
