Music Showcase #1 – Decades!!

New Zealand has some hugely talented musicians that just do not get the support they deserve from local media as they mostly play old recycled shit, or new cookie cutter nonsense, most of which is from the international market that really doesn’t need our support. I really doubt that playing more NZ music on the radio would turn any listeners away and it would really help to grow the struggling music scene we have here.

So in short the purpose of this little piece is to showcase an artist that I believe to be pretty freaking badass and today we feature Christchurch rock band Decades!!

Decades are a 4 piece band featuring Emma Cameron on Vocals and Rhythm Guitar, Liam Luggs on Lead Guitar, Curtis Booth on Bass, and Dan Diggilo on Drums and yeah, they are a straight up rock band!

The Decades name has only been around for the past few years, but the members have been playing music together for much longer than that. Previously they were known as Ashei but for various reasons they decided to change their name and sound and are what you see and hear today. Since the change the band has blossomed and have been signed to record label Warner New Zealand.

They have been working with Shihad’s Tom Larkin and been through a bit of artist development and mentoring with him. They worked together regarding the development of their new sound and music and he now manages/semi-manages the band also.

Despite what I said at the start about how NZ media and more specifically NZ radio does not support NZ music as much as they could or should, the bands and songs that they do get behind tend to do pretty damn well and Decades first single, Terrified, got a really good amount of radio support. This definitely set the band up with a good foundation from that perspective.

Following the release of Terrified they released 2nd single If It Kills Me. This is one of my personal favorites as when performed live it has an awesome high energy vibe that you can’t help but move to, and combined with its consistent rhythm you see new listeners pick it up pretty quick.

Soon after they released their first single Terrified they went on a nationwide tour with rock heavyweights Villainy and have since graced the stage at the Electric Avenue Festival and took the opening spot on The Rock Stage at this years Jim Beam Homegrown!

They took these festival opportunities to shoot the video for their 3rd single “I Was With Him” which I was lucky enough to help film!

In much more recent times Decades have released details around their new, debut, 10 track full-length album titled “The Truth And Other People” which is set to come out on July 14th. Along with this announcement they also released their 4th single Get Me Home.

This is the bands first full length album and in the past as Ashei they released a few ep’s and singles but never the statement piece that is a full length. I feel like from the 4 singles released so far we get a pretty damn good idea of what the album has in store and having heard a lot of the as yet unreleased tracks performed live I cannot wait to hear the studio versions all played through from start to finish.

In support of the album these guys are also going on the All Our Truths tour!! They are hitting the road for 5 shows across the North and South Island in July and are sharing the stage with 3 other awesome NZ Rock acts Skinny Hobos, Dead Favours, and Bakers Eddy, who will all undoubtedly be featured here in the future! So if you like what you have heard/read then head out to a show and check them out live!!

See the poster below for dates and details.
