Pink Ribbon Ride – Auckland 2016
On Sunday 9th October the Annual Pink Ribbon Ride was held in Auckland. This ride is organised by WIMA (New Zealand) and is to support the Breast Cancer Foundation.
With the weather forecast for the weekend looking Dismal I was preparing myself to be getting soaked. Ten there was some light, the forecast on the Saturday prior had improved somewhat, now there was only meant to be showers in the morning and rain in the afternoon. I could live with that, be home before I was too saturated.
Leading up to the event I thought it was best that I work on fitting the Pink theme of the ride, what better way to do this then to “paint” my bike pink. Both my brother and I went about paining our bikes pink with one of the temporary coating available.
We were not the only ones to get into the theme of the event, with streamers flying, ribbons tied one, Bras affixed and sticker applied just to name a few. It was certainly a sight to see. It didn’t stop at the bikes, no, The ridders were also kitted out in many and varied Pink costumes, Fairy wings, Angle Wings, Onsies (Unicorns, Pink Stitch, Cheshire cat ……..), Hi Vis vests and other attire they too looked the part.
Given how the weather was meant to be there was still a great turn out. 278 Registered bikes made it to the event.
The ride went from the Auckland Netball Courts, St Johns and finished up at Western Springs Car Park, this was after snaking along Mission Bay and up through the city. At times the ride stretched for more than 3 blocks, engines revving, horns tooting and people looking on.
The weather ended up holding off for the most part with only a light shower as we left and then a short heavy downpour once we go to Western Springs. This didn’t overly dampen the mood with people queuing up for the sausage sizzle and waiting around for the raffles.
Overall it was a great morning out and all for a good cause.
For those of you in the Capital (or surrounding towns) there is the Pink Ribbon Ride Wellington coming up on the 16th October.

Remember that if you have breasts (Men and women) know your body and check yourself, if you are unsure then see your doctor. Breast cancer is a killer but it is also survivable.
