The first RX Mazda’s have become cult classics, light weight agile coupes that were engaging and fun to drive using what was a revolutionary engine design. The first RX7 took the Rotary engine to the next level, putting it in a proper RWD sports car. The last RX7, the FD, is regarded as one of the greatest sports cars ever made. It is as fast as it is beautiful, and there was high hopes that it’s replacement would be even better.
Sadly Mazda served up the RX8 as a replacement. The RX8 was not a bad car, it handles well, and it is engaging to drive. But it’s rather heavy, especially for a Rotary powered coupe, and they have some reliability quirks, less than ideal in a modern car. They also fell a little flat on the styling, but not so bad that plenty of people didn’t like them. They sold well, but will never have the same level of classic status as the RX7.
So there was much hope in 2015 when Mazda showed a new Rotary concept, and now there is confirmation that the top decision makers at Mazda have given the go ahead for a new Rotary powered sports car, called the RX9.
And it looks like things are back to where they should be, light weight, lots of power and great looks.
A patent has been filed for a new Twin Rotor engine with Direct Injection and turbo charging that is set to make 400hp. The weight target is 1300kg, just right for a proper drivers car.
And it, if the design stays true to the concept car, it will be as good looking as it is fast.
Expected delivery is 2020, lets hope it is worth the wait.
