The Titan
In all honesty, I have been playing ALOT of Far Cry 5 the past few days and haven’t been watching any films.
Knowing that my weekly review was looming I jumped on Netflix to find a quick fix, I came across a couple of movies that I plan to review in the coming weeks but one jumped out at me and had me intrigued enough that I kept coming back to it (also having my son around, I couldn’t watch any horror’s or thrillers) i semi expected a good movie with a dodgy premise, however what I found was a mediocre movie with a very intereting idea and to a point semi realistic questionable happenings.
The Titan is centered around a family in the year 2048, the world is collapsing as the population has out grown the resources that the earth can provide, wars and famines are claiming the lives of many and as a result nations are waring, there is even mention through the movie of couple needing a permit to have children. None of this really comes into play through the movie aside from driving the narrative of the movie.
The family consists of Lieutenant Rick Janssen an Airforce pilot and war veteran (Sam Worthington), Dr Abigail Janssen who is Ricks wife and conveniently a paediatrician (Taylor Schilling) and Lucas Janssen Rick and Abigails son (Noah Jupe).
Rick voulenteers for an experimental biological experiment with a group of other soilders from different backgrounds all of whom have endured feats of survival that would probably cause death to most people, this experiment is being conducted by a government organization that believes human kinds only hope is to colonize one of Saturns moons, Titan, in order to do so the head of the Titan project Professor Martin Collingwood (Tom Wilkinson) believes the instead of changing the moon’s atmosphere it would be easier and more succesful to force humans to evolve to enable survival on Titan, creating a new species of humans.
The movie has a good idea and at times there are moments where I questioned the plausibility of something like it being not so much an actual idea, but an idea nonetheless.
At its core this isn’t an edge of your seat exciting Sci-Fi, but it is entertaining enough to keep you watching and enjoying watching, it is essentially a Sci-Fi love story but that love story is buried quite deep under the surface.
A lot of the time i was slightly reminded of the t.v series “The Unit” (if you haven’t seen it, I do recommend it) where the lives of the wives and the mental toll that was thrown upon the home environment from their husbands trying to cope with circumstances, in the Titans instance, the toll it took on the partners as they became scared of their partners and afraid of the choices they had made.
The movie is hard on expositional details, newspaper clippings all over the place, photographs littered through scenes, characters saying things that we don’t know but surely their associates would know, not a bad thing, but it does kind of punch you in your face with information on some things and leave you with no information on other things.
Where this film falls short is not with the acting, that holds ok though Worthington’s character lacks a lot in any kind of emotion and Schilling really does carry most of the scenes, nothing great but nothing worth moaning about, the editing and effects are good and like I said its a good story, but that’s it, its good, there feels like there should be more, like they had this epic idea and worthy narrative but they just didn’t push it, the movie just feels good.
I didn’t care when this person died or that person failed or whatever, I didn’t feel attached or invested, but I did feel entertained enough to watch it and I may not watch it again, but I would say “If your bored and you want something to watch, you could do far worse than this movie”.
Oh and don’t get your hopes up if you are into cars, because apparently in 2048 we will be driving the exact same vehicles we have now, if I had of missed the “Los Angeles 2048”I swear this could have been a movie set in 2018.
