Moppies Hops – Two Birds Taco

Two Birds Taco is an Australian beer, brewed for the GABS festival, it is only available in limited quantities here.
It was inspired after a trip to the states, the idea being to capture the flavours of a traditional Mexican Taco in a beer.
This is not a new idea, spice and chili go really well with malt and hops. Garage Project from Wellington to some awesome spiced beers, and you can sometimes find examples from mikkeller on our shelves.
According to Two Birds the essence of a good Taco is Corn, Coriander and Lime, all things that should go really well with hops and malt in a good IPA.

Except this is not a good IPA. It is a really good reminder of just how awesome New Zealand Beer is, and just how lucky we are. We are literally making some of the best beer in the world, as good as, and often better than craft beer coming out of the US and, most importantly the UK. Australia is not, they are some distance behind.

Two Birds Taco pours a very pale golden colour, with a weak head. There is no nose, don’t waste your time giving it a sniff. The first taste is weak, there is a faint hint of lime, maybe, and if you use your imagination you might pick up some coriander. I don’t know where the corn went.
It tastes like a mass produced overly marketed lager. To quote my wife: “Nah, I can’t taste anything in that.”
