KTM’s new Fuel Injected 2-Strokers!

In a huge leap forward, KTM has finally released details of two new bikes featuring their Fuel Injected 2-stroke motor, the 2018 KTM 250 EXC TPI and KTM 300 EXC TPI. The TPI stands for “Tranfer Port Injection”, the basis for the new tech. Ten years in the making, the system offers vastly improved fuel economy, reduced vibrations, and better reliability, while all the EFI sensors monitor the environment for precise tuning and power delivery.

 

 

The engine management system reads ignition timing, intake and ambient air pressure, oil and water temperatures, as well as throttle position, to deliver the correct fuel required through the injectors for the conditions given. Internally, both bikes have matching 72mm piston stroke, with the 250cc model having a slightly smaller bore than it’s big brother. Up top, both bikes are fitted with brand new 39mm throttle bodies, with integrated cold start circuits and idle speed controller screws.

 

 

Engine oil is held in a 0.7 litre tank, and flows into the intake via the throttle body to lubricate the cylinder and crankshaft bearings, fed by an electric oil pump. When calculated with the 9 litre fuel tank, riders should expect to use 5-6 full tanks of gas before needing to refill the oil tank. Electronically controlled, the system ensures a perfect fuel-oil mix based on RPM and engine loads. The end result is up to 50% less exhaust smoke than previous model bikes.

 

 

Annoying dirt bike vibrations have been minimized with the use of a lateral balancer shaft in the motor, for a more comfortable ride – even at high RPM, riders will feel less fatigued, giving a new meaning to being ‘buzzed’. Translate this into performance, and it will mean more consistency for longer distances, which could be a real game changer when it counts!

 

 

Think about it… No more pre-mixing your oil, no more guessing which jets to run on a frosty morning. just hit the starter button and let the bike do what it’s made for – tearing up the ruts!
