A simpler beer from a simpler time.
It can trace its origins back to 1929 when the the Waitemata Brewery Co. started in Otahuhu on the same site it still sits. Then in 1930 a publicly listed company was started called DB Breweries, this included the Waitemata Brewery Co. and the distributor Levers and Co. They went on to start buying, or buying into NZ Pubs and Bars, starting the trend that continues today of breweries controlling what beer, wine and spirits are sold through pubs by putting in their own taps and excluding other brands through tight and restrictive contracts with the bar owners.
They also started LiqourLand, the franchised liquor stores that they sold to Food Stuffs in 2008. This might be the best thing they ever did, as Food Stuffs have turned Liquorland into a haven for beer lovers, and supply a huge range of craft beer.
DB Draught itself started life in Timaru in the 1930s, and once upon time may have been a real full flavored Draught beer, before the brewery and brand were purchased by DB Breweries and the beer become commercialized and mass produced.
What does it taste like? Sweet and weak, it’s mass produced, mass market beer, what do you expect?
