Noise Complaints for Music Venues?

As many of you will have already seen, on Saturday night a gig was cut short featuring some international bands at the Kings Arms Tavern in Auckland. There has been a lot of debate as to who was at fault, who should pay, and whether or not the authorities over-reacted.

People are also saying “Well if you don’t like the noise then why did you move next to a live venue?” in regards to the person who laid the noise complaint. Although this is a valid argument rules are rules despite the fact that you are an established music venue or a household or a stadium and if these are not adhered to then there are consequences. Now the main issue I have with it is the relative lack of warning that there seemed to be. On the night in question it seems as if authorities just turned up and took gear without warning or adequate assessment of the situation. Are people able to just make unsubstantiated complaints and shut something down because its an annoyance?

There have been a few issues with lives venues and inner city apartment residents across a few major cities internationally and now Auckland is among them. It seems to be a trend threatening live music venues all over the place… Now i’m not sure if this is a thing that really works but there is a Change.Org petition going around asking for the Auckland Council to protect live music venues from this kind of issue in the future and hopefully save Auckland from becoming a boring music-less hole, especially considering the recent push to make Auckland a “City of Music“.

I have signed the petition, its easy enough to do and if it helps then great, but if not it hasn’t taken much out of my day…
