One Man’s Rubbish Is Another Man’s Barbecue!

Tuesday morning at The Barbecue Hut usually involves the glamorous job of loading up a week’s worth of cardboard and glassware recycling and heading off to the local refuse centre.

The upside? There’s a little shop there packed with all manner of discarded treasures.

As I was unloading the cardboard this morning, I glanced across the carpark towards the shop and there it was. Like a shining beacon, a barbecue that I instantly recognised!

Weber G.A. (Go-Anywhere), a popular choice at Steak Cookoff Association competitions.

Double speed finished-up the recycling and marched straight into the shop to hopefully claim my (I mean our) new barbecue.

I was determined to play it cool. Nothing in the shop has a price tag, so it all comes down to a bit of old-fashioned bartering, and the last thing I wanted was to show too much enthusiasm and talk myself into a higher price.

“How much for that old little grill thing?” I casually asked the shopkeeper.

She looked at me and said:

“Five bucks! You do know it’s a Weber GA, right?”

I could barely contain my outward overreaction…..“YES and SOLD!”

And just like that, one man’s rubbish was loaded into the car and given a new lease on life!

Now, if I’m being completely honest with myself, I needed another barbecue like I need a hole in the head, but sometimes the universe works in mysterious ways. Besides, there are weirdos out there who collect used stamps, so I reckon collecting barbecues isn’t that bad, especially when you get both form and function. That’s a win!

After a quick spit ’n’ polish and the eviction of an old hornets’ nest, it was pretty obvious the previous owner had used it maybe once or twice. It was in very good condition.

Today’s score showing barely any signs of use at all

So now comes the important question – what the hell do we barbecue first?

It certainly won’t be brisket, pork butt, beef chuck or mutton, as we do those most days on a much more suitable Pit Barrel.

Perhaps a picanha (rump cap steak) on the rotisserie? Maybe a reverse-seared tomahawk? How about some crispy chicken wings? Maybe just some humble snarlers?

Reversed seared tomahawk steak – good times!

Smoky, juicy medium-rare steak, fresh chimichurri, garlic prawns, crunchy slaw and crispy jacket spuds — bloody hard to beat!

Either way, I’m looking forward to putting the little Weber Go Anywhere to work.

Anyhoo, I just felt the need to bash the keyboard over a small win and, more importantly, remind everyone that recycling can be a bloody good thing!

Smoke on!
