#1: Overwatch
In May 2016, Blizzard Entertainment brought us a team-based multiplayer first-person shooter called Overwatch. Praise be to Blizzard for creating yet another amazing and addictive game. With 23 unique heroes, that are part of four roles, offense, defense, tank and support but each hero has different abilities that really diversifies the gameplay, which makes this game so much fun. Anyone can just pick up the controller or mouse and keyboard and have a tonne of fun. Unless you are a more serious gamer you could join in the competitive seasons and try reach the rank of Grand Master. Once you start a game you’re not stuck with the hero you chose, you can switch hero mid-game when you like if the team chemistry isn’t working or if the situation changes and you’re being countered. Try out each hero, see which one feels like you’re kind of play style. If you haven’t yet played Overwatch, best you do, because ya know, the world could always use more heroes. Are you with me?
#2: Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End
A fitting end for Nathan Drake. For a slow paced beginning this game did really well with the pace straight after. Stunning visuals and graphics, alongside amazing characters who have some really great chemistry. The writers, voice actors and actress’ did a brilliant job of delivering lifelike personalities from their respective characters and great chemistry with the fantastic dialogue and hilarious moments. Developers Naughty Dog even slipped in a nostalgic cameo, a chance to play the iconic Crash Bandicoot level Boulders. Uncharted 4 is a refreshing return to single player campaign games that aren’t over shadowed by their multiplayer, not to say it’s multiplayer isn’t good, it’s quite enjoyable and not just some feature to increase the price.
#3: Titanfall 2
Did you expect this to be here? I bet you didn’t! Nor did I before it was released. Titanfall makes a remarkable return with it’s sequel Titanfall 2. This is the kind of game I expected from Respawn Entertainment when Titanfall was first released but fell short and felt underwhelming. The gameplay is awesome, intense, chaotic and quick paced. The mobility of your pilot has increased with a grappling hook, sliding, and better parkour, the maps are less generic and your Titans actually feel like they do more in the fight. With more big beasties to choose from you can be a Titan destroyer, pilot crusher or objective controller. Along with an enjoyable single player campaign this game still has its heart in the multiplayer. I think it’s perfect for the casual gamer.
#4: Doom
Here we return to an old friend, ready to fight like hell! It’s just you, your badass shotgun, a tonne of demons and just the right amount of ammo to kill ’em all. As soon you jump into the single player campaign you’re reminded of the good ol’ days, the music starts up and the adrenaline starts pumping. DOOM does slowly fall into the realm of repetitiveness and the AI isn’t all that smart, but putting a shotgun to a demon watching it explode, with blood and body parts flying everywhere makes you sort of forget about all that. The multiplayer is a lot of fun, being able to turn into a demon and run around the map killing the opposing team by literally ripping them apart, biting their heads off or smashing them multiple surfaces like a ragdoll. DOOM really brought back that nostalgic feeling for the oldies while also showing off to new gamers what baddassery is all about.
#5: Dark Souls 3
FromSoftware you magnificent bastards. From pulls it off again in Dark Souls 3, portraying a world heading into apocalypse, yet is a breathtaking sight and a treasure to explore with it’s grandiose size and secrets around every corner. Of course Dark Souls wouldn’t be Dark Souls if it was easy, that’s why it still has the feeling of one step forward, four steps back when you try to make any progression but it just keeps pulling you back to in to keep going forward and take the challenges head on, die and figure out the mechanics of combat. The game does falter in big boss battles and when enemies clog the screen which result in framerate drops. But despite that flaw, Dark Souls 3 is perhaps the best in the series….just. So if you’re after a challenging game, Dark Souls 3 is for you.
Overwatch would have to be my GOTY
What’s yours?
