Why do we fart?

Now I know that farting is something we don’t like talking about, but let’s be honest we all do it! In fact, did you know that on average we fart up to 14 times a day.

Let me tell you that farting is absolutely normal, and if anyone tells you that they don’t, they’re not being entirely honest!

There are two main reasons why we fart… One reason is the air we ingest produces gas! When you eat or drink you don’t just ingest food, you take in small amounts of gas such as nitrogen and oxygen. The second reason is that when your body digests food, it also produces gas. All of these gases need to escape somehow, so they come out as farts!

The next question I’m guessing you’re probably asking yourself is, why do they smell? Well as the food passes through the colon, your gut bacteria feeds on it and ferments it. This process produces oxygen, hydrogen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and methane, sulfide, and ammonia. These gases give your farts that particular smell (particularly the sulfide).

Alright – so now you know the low down on why we fart and why they smell, I’m going to give you a few tips on how to obtain a healthier and quieter gut…

– Avoid fizzy drinks: carbonated drinks cause gas to build up in the intestinal tract.

– Add fibre to your diet gradually: a quick switch from low fibre to high fibre can make you fart more than normal. However, you need to give your gut bacteria and digestive system time to adjust.

– Cut down on beans, onions and fried foods: these release large amounts of gas as they break down in your body.

– Cut back on sweeteners: you’ll notice that on all artificial sweeteners there are warning labels, pay attention to those!

On a more serious note, if you have a lot of gas after you eat ice cream, yoghurt or any sort of dairy, check with a nutritionist or dietician as your body may have difficulty digesting lactose.
