L.P “Last Place” – Not What You’d Expect
At first glance, Last Place looks like, well… the last place you’d expect to find a decent snack before heading out to a show. But to our surprise, it delivered more than expected.
Food & Drink
I ordered the “Just a Dog”, and my wife went for the Buttermilk Chicken Burger. We also shared a side of fries with curry ketchup.
The Just a Dog was exactly that, simple and classic. A nicely toasted bun with ketchup and mustard, but the standout was the hot lamb sausage. A nice local twist, though at $14, it felt a bit overpriced for such a minimal offering. That said, it paired well with an ice-cold Waikato Draught.
The Buttermilk Chicken Burger – crispy chicken topped with iceberg lettuce, pickles, cheese, and buffalo ranch on a seeded bun. The buffalo sauce added a nice kick, and the flavor was spot on. Washed down with a tap-poured Marley Vodka Soda, it made for a satisfying combo. However, at $22 for just the burger, it didn’t quite stack up in value, especially when many places offer a full combo (burger, fries, and salad) for the same price, sometimes even with a drink included.
Now, the fries, those were excellent. Hot, fresh, and perfectly salted. But the real star? The curry ketchup. It sounds odd, but it just works. A bold, unexpected flavor that really elevates the whole snack.
Service
The entrance might feel a bit rough around the edges, but once inside and up the ramp, service was quick and friendly. We were greeted almost immediately, drinks were poured fast, and food arrived within five minutes, hot, fresh, and served with a smile.
Venue Vibes
If you’re after a quiet sit-down meal and a chat, this isn’t your spot. Last Place is a live music venue, and it shows—loud, energetic, and full of character. Think 90s grunge bar, with quirky trinkets, posters, and a couple of retro arcade machines thrown in for good measure. It’s nostalgic, gritty, and buzzing with energy.
Final Verdict
If you’re after a quick, tasty bite in a lively setting, Last Place is worth a visit. It’s a bit on the pricey side for what you get, but the flavors are solid, the service is fast, and the vibe is uniquely cool.
7/10
