Digger | Review

It’s rare that a movie comes out that has the ability to tare down an idea to its core and poke such a middle finger at the establishment,

This contains mild spoilers

Digger introduces us to Digger Rockwell (Cruise) an Oil Tycoon who is written to portray so many ideas of what “big oil” people are like, he has a close relationship with the President (Goodman) and they are making efforts to cover up some huge environmental issues. While that might sound like a bit of a greeny idea, zoom out a bit as the writers have. There is a much bigger picture happening that “Digger” shows us with a great middle finger approach to it.

This is a film that you’ll want to watch if you have a healthy scepticism of “the establishment” and Big companies wagging the tail of the dog to control peoples understanding of the world around them. in that, I doff my hat to Cruise.

I’ve personally never been that big a fan of Tom Cruise, I find the Mission Impossible movies a bit over the top and he seems a bit of a weirdo from some of the interviews I’ve seen over the years. I did very much enjoy the movies like Topgun, Maverick and Days of Thunder but outside of those, I’ve been quite happy to not watch his films. This movie changed my opinion of Cruise for the better. This movie had the balls to shine a spotlight on some of the biggest issues, secrets and powerful people in the world and they made us laugh doing it.

We meet Digger as what seems to be an eccentric billionaire with an unhealthy relationship with his cat, and we watch him unravel as things don’t go in his favour. The unravelling gives the viewer as sense of satisfaction after seeing the way Digger is to his staff, the problem and the world in general. This film will separate the strongly political as some will land in favour of Digger till the bitter end, others will take early joy in his shortcomings. which is why this film has been described as polarizing. The depth this film goes to throughout Diggers experience is immense, there are so many subtle shots at ideas of things we see all the time and never really consider which add to the narrative that the writers and producers want the audience to consider. I think that’s what I liked about this film the most was the implications they are making about things that most of us take for granted. I believe this is the kind of film that will get people talking about real issues.

Cruise was quoted as saying this is his best work yet, I would agree with that. We all like a big Hollywood blockbuster, but this makes you think weither you want to or not.

I’ll keep the big revelation for you to enjoy, but I will say the twists are amazing and add to what I’ve previously said about the intent of what they want you to see. the level of detail in the film is staggeringly good. from the way the actors are made up to exaggerate their appearances to the little bits you might miss on the first watch. I’ve been telling certain friends they will want to watch this and I want to see it again and pick up more of the details.

I rate this a solid 10/10 which is possibly the first and maybe only thing I’ve ever given a 10. I was waiting for a break in the story to go to the bathroom and I instantly regretted missing a plottwist, this movie does not let up at anypoint so prepare your snacks and put your phone down.

Thanks Universal for having us!
