Minions & Monsters – Review

It’s true. I’m an unironic Minion lover now. I think I just enjoy the concept of what they are. Little yellow beans who chase the big boss of bad, thinking this will provide the catharsis they need in their immortal lives. And as they’ve crossed time, they’ve found stories that weave infinitely throughout their ‘Despicable’ universe. And Minions & Monsters may just be their best yet.

Now look. I know the ‘Happy’ song by Pharrell. I know the weird hyper-European voice of Gru performed by Steve Carrell. And I might have seen one or two of the original films. But the Minion spin-off? Dare I say I spat on it. Cursed it to the sun. Laughed at the sheer sight of capitalism rearing it’s hind legs, ready to kick the money out of families. But now? I am what I am. A lover of these Minions who embrace friendships and chaos.

Minions & Monsters is a story about movies. Minions. Monsters. And it’s somehow this exceptionally well-packaged film about movies, minions and monsters. When the initial casting credits appeared on screen, I scoffed at first. A collection of prestigious actors, like Jeff Bridges (playing 2 roles because he’s that good), Alison Janney, Jesse Eisenberg and Trey Parker of South Park Fame. “How did they get them in this movie?! MONEY I BET…” was my initial thought. It’s also probably correct. But also no more of a reason than the excellent story the film delivers. Which also includes a 15-minute segment entirely in Minionese.

Yet that’s the magic of the film, and also film itself. To present something you may not understand entirely. But you know it. You feel it. And it’s especially prescient in the main relationship of the film. The friendship between James the dreamer, and Henry the stalwart. A pair who support one another while their Minion tribe endeavors to chase the ‘Big Boss’. And because of it, it creates the journey that will one day lead them to the most ‘Despicable’ one. And there they discover it’s not so much the biggest evil they want. But maybe just some friends who enjoy all the chaos and whimsy that they do.

This honestly may be one of my favorite movies of the year. So endearing and light, and filled with as many jokes for kids as adults, it's the kind of entertaining romp I can get behind. I honestly am floored at how much I enjoyed that. Banana.
