This was not what I expected. That’s a good thing..
I’ve not bothered a lot with super hero movies lately, the last thing I’m interested in is a clean cut superhero revamp. that’s not what this is, at all.
We meet Kara, aka Supergirl as a drunk bum who’s hiding out in the galaxy avoiding the reality of her situation. We meet Kara down, out with just her dog for company. Instantly this sets the tone for the rest of the film. It’s gritty and dark and funny and bad ass which I think is a great way to frame Supergirl in this day and age. Not only were the characters well drawn but the picture was visually stunning at times and constantly engaging. Kara goes full John Wick when the main villan shoots her dog and shes got limited time to save him.

Supergirl becomes a reluctant almost anti-hero, certainly a reluctant one in a quest of shared interest and a tag along with a bone to pick. The story does dive a little into the lore of Superman and where they come from but its far from the focus, which again was very welcome.
I am a fan of movies like Riddick, Spawn and other such super hero type movies where the lead is not the clean cut hero but does ultimately do the right thing by the viewer at some point or another, even if there are a few unexpected choices made by Kara. This all adds up to a darker, rougher and more rewarding watch. I don’t think I would have bothered with this one even after the trailer but having now seen it I’d reccomend it to anyone that enjoys the darker side of those sorta franchises.
Lobo played by Jason Mamoa is a great time, unexpected laughs and comradery with unlikely characters. Lobo provides the chaotic neutral with laughs and scares. David Corenswet plays Superman, I was a little let down by that, he was good but far from great. A bit mid tier for a superman, a cameo from a more convincing superman like Henry Cavil, however that doesn’t work with the casting of the Superman movie which I am yet to see, so there might be some redemption there.

See if it you like
A strong youthful and gritty Supergirl set in a dark tone with a lot of real struggles. Familiar enough with the franchise that you know what you’re watching but not so overwhelmingly clean cut.
I’d give it an 8/10
Thanks for having us at the premier! we had a blast!
