The Odyssey – Review

I am an IMAX seat protestor. Specifically the Auckland IMAX cinema. New Zealand’s true 1:43:1 format IMAX cinema has the worst seats. I know the location hasn’t really found its legs again, but I’ll be damned if it doesn’t deserve better. Especially when Christopher Nolan has made the first feature film to be shot completely in IMAX. I wanna be comfortable while watching it! And it would help if that bug would somehow remove itself from the lens.

But I digress.

Nolan’s retelling of Homer’s epic poem, Odyssey, leaps out of the screen with visuals so striking. Sound so deafening. And effects so practical, that I can’t help but think this is the story Homer was trying to retell. And while certain online ‘voices’ want you to think it’s attempting to cater to certain audiences in its casting and American delivery, I have to commend Nolan’s choice on how to present the scale of this thing in a grounded way.

Telling the story of Odysseus after the ten-year-long Trojan War, Matt Damon sets out on an epic journey of a King trying to return home. Joining our favourite Team America puppet, is Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, John Leguizamo, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson and honestly the list goes on. I also got excited when I spotted Ryan Hurst, most famously known as Opie from Sons of Anarchy, as he’s portraying Kratos in Prime’s upcoming God of War series! He’s doing double Greek! (well, warrior-wise I mean).

The choice to film fully in IMAX reflects what Nolan intended. That’s not just about the scale as I mentioned earlier. But the work required, and the work he wanted to do to make this epic. With the current technology, you can only shoot 3 minutes of IMAX footage PER REEL. That meant every scene is made up of spliced 3 minute shots. Not only that, but the cameras themselves are as loud and as massive as the movie itself. The end justifies the means after all.

If you have been looking forward to this movie. Been consuming the mass marketing out there for it. Or simply want to continue riding the highs of a good Nolan flick, then The Odyssey is for you. There’s no way people can say “I don’t know how he keeps doing it”. Because the reason Christopher Nolan keeps doing it, is because like Homer. Like Odysseus. He is extremely good at doing it.
