Captain America: Civil War is the third and final installment of Steve Rogers/Captain America (Chris Evans) standalone series while also being the beginning of Phase 3 for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The movie takes place one year after the Avengers: Age of Ultron situation. Cap and the newly formed Avengers squad are on a mission in Nigeria, to capture the villain Crossbones (Frank Grillo). Things don’t go to plan and Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), steps in and saves Cap, while causing collateral damage. This leaves the public in fear of the world’s mightiest heroes due to the events that have put innocent lives in danger.
The United Nations then put forth an agreement which requires any super powered person to be monitored by the UN. Cap and Sam Wilson/Falcon (Anthony Mackie) are against the agreement and on the other end Tony Stark/Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Vision (Paul Bettany) and Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) realise a compromise must be made, the rest of the Avengers remain partially undecided on the issue.
I’ll leave the basis of the plot there as to not spoil any more if I haven’t already for some.
The movie circles around Cap and Stark and their dividing opinions, while that is the main focus no one gets left out and you get to see how the other characters truly feel about the agreement and the current situation they’re in so they just don’t feel like a cameo though some side character scenes felt a bit unnecessary. The story deals with political and personal responsibility, while also introducing new characters, T’Challa/Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman) and the very teenage Peter Parker/Spiderman (Tom Holland), as you’d expect to see from the latest comics. I was highly impressed by the portrayal of both characters from their comic book counterparts. I felt more emotion in Civil War than Winter Soldier and The First Avenger which is an improvement as it makes it feel like a combination of action and drama but not the soppy soap opera kind. It’s a wonderful juggling act and Civil War doesn’t drop the ball once.
It’s a fun yet mature movie, but Civil War did feel like an Avengers or Iron Man movie as the storyline bounced back and forth from Cap to Stark and back again and it had more characters in it than both Avengers films has had. I’m very happy how it builds on top of the MCU and provides excitement for the upcoming Phase 3 movies.
Marvel has done a Marvellous (see what I did there) job at setting up Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and I can’t wait for Doctor Strange set to release later this year in November.
I give Captain America: Civil War an emphatic 9/10, would see again.
