THE EMPIRE
There is an increasing amount of sub-genres in the world of music as bands and musicians continue to experiment and try to seperate themselves from the pack. But is it getting a to a point of ridiculousness or is it somewhat necessary?
I feel this would be quite a polarising topic in some ways as some forms of music people don’t see any difference between – such as the heavy or death metal genre’s – some say it all sounds the same while others can pick out the differences with ease.
I personally don’t mind the increasing amount of sub-genres, I feel it tells you a bit about the band and what you are getting in for if they create some obscure genre you have never heard of you are probably in for something similar with their music, and if a band just lists it as straight up Rock you won’t be going in expecting something overly ground-breaking.
With the amount of music and bands that are out there we often use a genre as a vetting system. This can be both good and bad for the bands because if it’s something we have never heard of we may either be intrigued by it or completely put off by it and move on. But the same goes the other way, if the genre is too straightforward and non-descript we may see it as potentially boring and move on too. I guess it comes down to knowing the audience that you are after as well as trying to define yourself in a general/not so general way… finding the right balance between generic and unique.

A weird one for me was Pornogrind – Grindcore with a sexual twist… interesting combo…
