Ahhh where to start, this has been one of the most hyped movies in recent years so no doubt there are going to be many disappointed people out there and I’m one of them, but I expected to be..
TL;DR – its basically Hancock sub PR guy for CIA agency guy and add the very sexy Margot Robbie for some eye candy and one liners you saw in the trailers
Now as I said, I expected to be disappointed, the main reason I expected this was 2 fold, firstly because of over hype and secondly because it was a huge task to do this right and frankly they missed the mark…
Now I understand they only had 2 hours to fit in a lot of character development, and someones going to be laid short.. But giving the Joker that little air time was very disappointing, not quite as disappointing as Jarrod Letto’s shallow unemotional portrayal of the Joker, but there could have been so much more story of their romance ( and more accurate to the books) than there was, granted yes it was touched on but given its such a strong part of the story for one two of the most celebrated figures, they could have done better..
As for the story there are many holes which again yadda yadda expect that its a movie but fuck you, the real die hard fans of this movie who have loved the comic books for a long time I think are going to be upset by things like , June Moon going against the squad from the get go, they now if they ever make another movie can’t add in Brimstone even tho they stole the part where Deadshot shoots out Brimstones heart in place of Enchantress having hers removed, perhaps that’s a little throwback to 86? who knows..
I don’t even know where to start with Letto’s Joker so lets just leave it at.. He’s the worst Joker ever, but that’s just my opinion
I was thoroughly disappointed with the fact that most of Harley Quinn’s best lines were in the various trailers, there were very few additional quips that raised an eyebrow or a chuckle… and it kinda fucked me off that one of the most loved bad asses of all time was shelved as cute eye-candy and one liners, Harley has such a rich history through out the DC universe.. Harley needs her own movie and Margot Robbie needs to be given the space to explore the role and really get some distance with Harley
Still, oh.. I purposely didn’t see this in 3d… cause 3d still sucks…
Effects on the whole were pretty good with some minor scenes seeming overlooked I expect due to time or budget but they were there and I noticed them, example the security cam footage effect of El Diablo. which is shown more than once. Will Smith’s Deadshot pretty much carried this movie in terms of the scope of what they were trying to do and I was ok with that, in recent years Smith has really established himself away from the tacky alien punching pilot of Independence Day and I enjoyed him as Deadshot
Killer Croc to me seemed somewhat out of place given he’s much more a Batman adversary than part of the Suicide Squad, there were no hat tips to this in Afflecks cameos and fuck you Affleck.. just go back to rom coms that people watch before they fuck…
Captain Boomerang who seems to have lost his bars for this movie portrayed as an Australian drunkard, or just.. Australian.. didnt really feel true to his gritty racist writings from the days of the flash… but at least they did get over that he’s pretty useless
Now i know this sounds overly negative but the problem is when this much fandom and 30+ years of following is put into new media there is a metric fucktone of responsibility to the source to not fuck it up… and lets just say, they did but they didn’t and I’ma let this one slip but next time don’t fuck it up..
Now this is a totally watchable movie.. if you’re a fan of the comics do yaself a favour and go check it out on the big screen ( just not the one in Tauranga cause the screen is a bit fucky and one of the speakers is broken in cinema 6) otherwise wait for the DVD or some of you badasses will download it and I’l have nothing to do with you dirty criminals…
