Much like Scream 5, 2026’s Scary Movie is out to right wrongs with its ‘rebooquel’. What’s that you ask? Well it’s a reboot, that’s also a sequel. And this ‘rebooquel’ would only come about thanks to two very specific factors:
- The downfall of producers Bob and Harvey Weinstein.
- Words of encouragement from their father, Howell Stouten Wayans, prior to his death in 2023.
With these coming about, the Wayans felt confident in being able to return the series to the highs it reached in parts 1 and 2, before its steady decline in parts 3, 4 and 5. And these films, along with many other things, become fodder for the many jokes delivered during its solid 96 minute runtime.
A riff on Scream 6 appears on-screen, before it jumps back to a riff on…well, any other Scream movie from there.
And it never stops. Feeling somewhat like a Marvel Cinematic Saga, the more you know, the more you’ll see how much the Wayans, and Director Michael Tiddes, are grabbing at a multitude of things at any one time. Elevated horror? You got it. Oscar winning films? It’s there. And each a spoof done in both big and small ways, that it’s this constantly layered punchline which leaves no prisoners.
And I feel in that sort of context, that’s what they want to achieve with the film. While Scary Movie 1 and 2 may have been of the era, that doesn’t mean we leave that type of comedy behind. Because it’s not that any one thing is the butt of the joke. It’s that everything is. And I think that sort of irreverence is almost hyper-relevant right now. Especially when that ‘touch on the nose’ humour is so blatant when talking about ‘elevated’ genres of film (a horror film is a horror film after all).
With healthy doses of sex jokes, Shorty laughing, and modern day content and streaming being taken down, Scary Movie is the legacy film it strives to be. It says “We’re just a Scary Movie! If you don’t like it, that’s fine! We probably weren’t for you anyway”.
And then it’ll reach out its finger to your nose, hoping you laugh at whatever is incoming at least once.
It's like a 3, that's closer to a 4 out of 5, so a - 7.5
7.5
Man, if you just want a silly movie then go watch it. My face hasn't hurt this much from laughing in a good while! AND STOP CARING (while you watch it)
