New music with a new sound, did they pull it off or s**t the bed?

Bands are frequently changing their style and sound, some pull it off, and others not so much… recently there have been a few new releases that have tried a different sound or style and garnered a mixed response.

First off let’s start with the latest Linkin Park track “Heavy.” Now this isn’t the first time that Linkin Park have experimented with their sound. In the past they have had varying degrees of success and failure. Starting out as Nu Metal, then moving into Electronica, then finding their guitars again, now delving into what can only be described as generic Pop. I think my friend put it best stating that he would probably like this song more if he didn’t know it was by Linkin Park. That’s not saying it’s a bad song, just that we hold Linkin Park to a much higher standard than the seemingly cookie-cutter pop song that this is.

Next up let’s talk about everybody’s favourite band to hate… Nickelback. They just released a new track titled “Feed The Machine” which is toted as being one of the heaviest and most metal tracks musically that the band has released for a long time, perhaps ever. This song sits nicely in the Hard Rock genre for me and although it’s not a HUGE departure from previous music, it is still a relatively new direction that I, and a lot of their more old school fans, welcome with open arms. I have been waiting for them to release something that I can get behind like I did when they released “Silver Side Up” all those years ago.

Finally I want to talk about a band that many of you may not have heard of, but who have been getting a lot of slack for their latest release and that band is Suicide Silence. Their new track “Doris” is their first track to ever feature clean vocals and a lot of their fans are not on board. The video for this track is sitting at almost twice as many dislikes as likes and the band have stated that over half of the new album is clean singing which has resulted in quite a large boycott movement. When a deathcore band introduces their deathcore fans to clean singing they way they do in this track i’m not too sure what they were really hoping for, it’s really weird and I find it doesn’t fit the song at all… but I am holding out hope for the rest of the album when it comes out.

What do you think of the above bands trying out something new?

Know of any other bands that have failed or succeeded to change their sound?
