Joining a gym is a really daunting task for a lot of people. From the annoyingly long sign up process all the way to your first session where you spend the entire time desperately trying to not look clueless as you move from machine to machine. A lot of people are in the same boat as you are, you’re not alone. But joining a gym doesn’t have to be terrifying, infact, It should be a really positive experience that makes a long lasting, positive impact on a person’s life. The day they made the first step to become a better version of them self both inside and out.
My first piece of advice for anyone joining a new gym would be to remember that everyone is there for the same reason you are. And that is self improvement. That’s why I fell in love with fitness. The gym is a place where anyone can go and put all their worries aside for however long they spend there. and for that brief amount of time.. Nothing else matters except your own well being and self improvement. so don’t stress about what people think! i guarantee most people will be inspired just to see a fresh face.
My second piece of advice is to set a goal for yourself. when I started personal training we were taught about S.M.A.R.T. goals. S.M.A.R.T. stands for Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Time-frame. so for example, a person looking to lose weight might set them self the goal of losing 0.5KG a week for the next 12 weeks. its a very attainable and realistic objective that is specific to their needs, its easily measured with scales, and there’s a set deadline to keep them on track. remember, the results will never come over night. its a slow process and so you’ll need a plan to make sure you stay strong and dedicated to your goals. plus, its a damn good feeling once you finally smash that goal!
my final piece of advice is to practice basic gym edicate. things like wiping down equipment once you’re done using it, never interrupting a person during their set, putting your weights back etc. really basic stuff but it goes along way and it makes a person a lot more approachable when you see them doing their part around the gym instead of leaving a trail of sweat, stink, and un-racked weights in their wake.
To those who don’t exercise currently but are looking to become a better version than they were yesterday I urge you to join your local gym, befriend one of the more experienced members or one of the personal trainers so they can help you out where you need it, and reep the benefits that fitness offers, both inside and out.
Walking in is the first step, and everyone starts somewhere.
